Night Music
I cannot remember when I really knew what a Rickenbacker* was,
I do, however, remember when I first heard one...
I was on a porch; it was a warm summer night,
I was sitting at the feet of my Dad, who was with his friend,
I was watching them and listening; Dad was happy...
I loved seeing Dad happy; I heard a train in the background,
There was a soft and soothing whistle; I know I heard the tracks rumble,
I looked up at the starlit sky, I saw the red flashing light of an airplane;
I felt the warm summer air...
I could hear the howl of a hound in the distance, then, it happened...
I heard the sound of music in the night; it seemed to just float in the air...
It was a soulful and melodic sound; it had a certain sweetness newly discovered...
It was the sound of childhood;
It harmonized with the hound, the train, the tracks...
To this day when I hear that sound I see my Dad's face, his smile...
Oh yes, that's what I heard that night,
To be sure, it was a Rickenbacker*...
