12/13 Poem of the Month

  Nature was a Lumberjack

The wind can be cruel, it damages.
It can create a sense of uneasiness,
A stricken sort of spirit, fear filled.
The tree was teetering after the snap;
You could hear the fiber of the wood crackle…
The smell of the burning maple in the late fall air.
This tree offered shade on warm summer days,
It now stood injured, no longer peaceful…
There was now seen a threat,
Hundreds of pounds of dense Maplewood overhead…
Too high to tend to,
Too frightening to ignore…
Yellow tape is the quick salve, for now…
Caution, do not approach, danger above.
The teetering, injured, formerly peaceful maple
Now stands a threat; man what will you do?
I hear a strong west wind, a howl in the wee hours;
The cold is chilling; the sense of power is all around.
The night has not surrendered the dark,
The howl is abounding…
Crack! Wham! Teetering wood has collided with earth,
No harm has come, the living are spared,
The loved ones are safe in their beds,
Peace has returned to the maple…
What has returned this peace?
This night, this cold and windy night,
Nature was a lumberjack…
