A note from Joseph James: I have shared two of my most notable poems this month.
The first was on display at the Jonathan Edwards College at Yale Univerity. The
second has appeared on the curriculum at a local middle school. I believe the
the reason for the noteriety is due to the importance of all being equal, loved,
and given the right to be judged by their character...
Polara
Those notes, the chords, that melody…
It’s Bacharach…
I travel to childhood,
I’ve landed in the back of the “Polara”
I crank down the window…
The sky is bluer than I realized,
I see the familiar heads in the front seat,
Yes they lead the way, Mom, Dad…
Traveling through the sixties with their kids,
I know I’m being sheltered…
I hear the sounds of Vietnam…
Dr. King? Why? Who did that?
Robert Kennedy? He was John’s brother…
“Where we goin ’ Ma?”
“Uncle Al’s for a few days”
“Why Ma? Why can’t we stay home?”
“They say there may be riots”,
“What is riots Ma, what are they?”
“People are unhappy, they want everyone to know.”
“Hey dad, think we can swim in Uncle Al’s pool?”
“Don’t you always Joey?”
“Yeh, guess I do… you mean it’s ok to have fun during the riots?”
“Sure it won’t change things…”
“O K Dad… what do you think will change things…? ”

Dear Atticus
Dear Atticus, I have admired you for years,
I will always remember the powerful silence you displayed on the porch,
I could see from your example that strength comes from a man’s inner self,
We need to do the right thing come what may…
Others may hate us, they may spit in our face, they may threaten our children…
They may go as far as to harm them…
This cannot alter our course; the true hero must remain a constant…
The loneliness will not show to the children, firm as a rock will be the demeanor,
Justice for all men is the goal, defend them you will,
The gift of the simple one will be graciously accepted… the life of your children,
“Stand up Miss Jean Louise, your father’s passing” that is what was said in the balcony of the court house…
I stand up for you now…
Thank you Aticcus Finch, thank you for helping a young boy to see what a real man should act like,
I have taken it with me into manhood...
