                                 She Never Let Me Down

Childhood, filled with innocence, days looking for approval,

Always wanting to be told how much I was loved…

I remember looking for compliments: how cute!

Who wouldn’t just suck those words in?

It was grand being cute, being the object of all that attention…

I remember in a small way, being an actor of sorts, fishing for those kind words,

How big he is getting, he looks just like... you know the rest.

It was not only the waking hours that built my character,

It was at bedtime, when the lights were out, except for that little night light,

I saw the door open ever so slowly; mom would not want to wake me,

She would carefully walk to my bedside; I knew she would check me.

This was my most important role; remember: I was a true child actor…

It was time to pretend that I was sound asleep; totally unaware…

I was, however, very aware; I knew she would check the covers,

She would check my breathing; this was not my concern,

What I always looked for, what I longed for was: the kiss…

Would mom kiss me even when I slept?

This, I must say, meant everything to me…

She never let me down…

I love you, mom…
