Do you think a running hot water faucet could cause a hot water heater to fail prematurely? If you answer yes you are correct. The question is why? It is true the more it is used, the faster an appliance will fail. That is true even with cars and lawn mowers and such.
What is it specifically that does in a water heater? It is the oxygen in the water, H2O, the O is what causes the metal components in the tank to corrode and rust. That is why, say, a family of 4 will go through 2 water heaters before a single person will go through one. Unless that single person has a hot water faucet leaking, it could do in the heater rather quickly, why?
A leaky faucet never stops running, the water heater is continuously being oxygenated with new water, also cycling the burner on and off. This condition also wastes water and fuel, what is the lesson? If you have a leak fix it fast! It is too costly in the long run,some fixes are easy and can be done by the homeowner; the tough ones? Call you're favorite plumber. Don't make you're water heater say "O the Oxygen"!
