What a tragic and powerful storm ‘Sandy’ proved to be. I hope all are recovering and putting it all together. I thought I would talk about a subject we have covered in the past. Carbon Monoxide is a deadly and odorless gas. We have already had reports of poisoning post ‘Sandy’.
It is vital to remember the title of this article: remember any combustible fire needs to be vented outdoors. Generators are very useful; however, they prove to be a major cause of poisoning. Be sure they are never used in doors or too close to areas where the fumes can enter the home. There have been reports of charcoal fires being used indoors! This too is a deadly situation, folks have died from this. Please remember: Combustion creates Carbon Monoxide.
It is not worth the risk, many towns have outlawed the use of kerosene heaters as well, they too can be dangerous and a fire hazard. Candles too can be deadly; they are the leading cause of fires.
Please be safe, be smart. Be sure to have Carbon Monoxide detectors and smoke alarms in the manufacturer’s recommended areas. Have all of your heating equipment checked regularly for safe operation and Carbon Monoxide leaks.
I hope all are well, please take care, take care of safety for yourself and your family.
Thanks, J J.
