4/15 Newsletter "Gas is safe, only when used Safely" reprint from 10/10
10/10 Newsletter "Gas is safe, only when dealt with safely "Millions of folks around the world use natural gas for heat, hot water, cooking, etc.  It is a safe product, only when dealt with safely!  As we spoke last month in the newsletter, only licensed plumbers should be used to perform work that pertains to the health and well being of your family.  With that in mind we are reminded of the terrible tragedy in San Bruno, California.
It is true that these types of explosions are relatively rare, they do indeed occur more often than we might think.  It is always due to a failure, that may seem like a rather obvious statement, yet it IS the reason for explosions.  The following points are listed to aid in being aware of safe natural gas use, it is not an exhaustive list, however, it does aid in the safe use of gas.

1.) Be sure that all the gas piping in your home is up to code (you can ask your plumber or gas company to inspect for you).
2.) Speak to all family members about the smell of gas and to be aware of the danger it poses (see list below on "what to do if you smell gas").
3.) Maintain all appliances, boilers, furnaces, etc. according to manufacturers requirements.
4.) Be aware of all shut off valves and your main gas meter location (this is where your main gas valve is located).
5.) Install carbon monoxide detectors and natural gas detectors in appropriate locations in your home (the manufacturer's will direct you).  These detectors, as well as smoke detectors, are essentials!

Were you aware of the fact that natural gas can seep through the walls of a basement?
It is true and this has caused many of the explosions in homes and businesses.  The San Bruno tragedy was apparently caused by an underground gas line.  I would be wrong to judge anyone until a full investigation is reported; it was a failure of the piping system that caused this terrible explosion.  If you should smell gas, do not ignore it!  The following list is a model of a gas utility companies suggestions upon smelling gas:

1.) Have all in the home leave immediately.
2.) DO NOT operate lights, phones, or any electric appliances.
3.) DO NOT connect or disconnect any power plugs from electrical outlets.
4.) DO NOT light a match or a lighter.
5.) Go to a neighbors home and use their phone to call 911 and the utility that
                     serves your home.

It is my hope and desire that all will be safety conscious when it comes to our homes and families, may you have good health and be safe in all your endeavors.  If you have comments or questions you may use the guest book or my e-mail, or just give me a call.
