This may seem an odd title for a plumbing subject. However as we have discussed in past newsletters, modern plumbing has aided in better health and is responsible for eradicating many diseases. The 'Black Plague' as an example, can be connected to sewage leeching into the water system in Europe. Early Manhattan, N. Y. city was rife with disease from improperly treated sewage. 'Typhoid Mary' , who was actually Mary Mallon, an Irish immigrant, who was infamous for spreading the disease of her unwanted moniker. She was a cook who also carried the disease. This was an ominous combination. She was responsible for infecting 33 people and caused the death of three of them. One of the main reasons for this is, not only would she not stay out of food service, but she refused to wash her hands! This spread the disease to innocent people. What do we learn? Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly, teach your children as well.
Remember to keep your plumbing system up to date, do not use unlicensed workers. It is not worth the risk! 'Typhoid Mary' has grown in infamy, she has been said to have killed thousands, that is not true, but how sad that any had to get sick or die due to a lack of hygiene.
Thanks JJ.
