Most of us are familiar we the reliable cliche: 'Compare apples to apples'.
We know the good guidance meant from those words. It is good to remember though:
apples can be
very  different, therefore we need to be diligent when we compare, whatever it may be. Shall we say garbage disposals? A true story:
I was asked by a customer to find a replacement for a broken 12 year old disposal.
I asked, of course, for the model number and the horse power, which she provided. It was not an inexpensive model, it had stainless steel components, reversing motor,( which helps keep clogs to a minimum) it was on the high end of disposals, say like a Cadillac. To replace this disposal would cost around $450.00.
Well my customer only remembered that the disposal had a 3/4 horse power motor. All the other features were not noted by her. She received a price from a different company for $190.00. Needless to say, my price seemed exorbitant. This was surprising to my client as I have always been fair and honest. I assured her that I was not charging double, she simply was priced for a Chevy by the others; I had in fact given her the proper replacement quote for her Cadillac! It ended amiably.
What do we learn? There are disposals and there are disposals. We need to check thoroughly any product we are purchasing with the different models available. Features such as: Warranties, product materials , convenience of operation , performance capabilities etc.

As far as apples are concerned I tend to go for the 'Granny Smith' variety, although they do evoke some thought: first, was there really a 'Granny Smith'. Second, I think I like them because they remind me of the sour green apples in my old Fair Haven alley way. We use to play in these alleys all the time. At seven, these apples were a part of our summer, tart and enjoyable.
               Thanks, JJ
