Many years ago plumbers would only use metal type supply tubes to hook up toilets and faucets. These were essentially copper tube that were chromed. It took a lot of practice to bend and line up these supply lines. They would connect to supply valves with brass ferrels and nuts, known as compression. These lines are still used when aesthetic requirements call for them. However to a large extent they have been replaced with what is known as "quick" connect tubes. They are very pliable thus easily maneuvered, installing much quicker than the rigid metal. There are 2 types of these tubes: braided stainless steel and plastic. Please stay away from the plastic! These are not reliable; they do cost less, however the braided metal tubes are also called "no burst". The plastic tubes cannot be called that because that's exactly what they do- BURST! So please forgo the plastic...
Thanks , JJ
