We are all aware of the tragic explosion from a natural gas leak in Manhattan recently. It makes me wonder as a contractor if somehow the danger signs were ignored. It seemed in reports that there were folks complaining about the "smell" of gas. Natural gas of course is odorless, there is a rotten egg type of smell added to it. It is good to ask yourself if you could identify this odor; I have had customers who could not smell it. This is troublesome as the best way to detect a gas leak is by smelling it. Even a small gas leak is detectable. If you should smell a gas leak NEVER try to go it alone, leave the premises, call 911, call the local gas co.
Never use the phone in the dwelling that has the suspected leak. Do not turn on any lights or use any electric appliance. Exit for safety, that is the key.
I recently smelled gas on the street in front of my house, it was decided that the utility should be called. They used their gas detecting equipment and found a major leak on the gas main: right below where I park my pick-up truck! I was sure glad I made that call. It is a difficult fact to report, however, the gas infrastructure is very old, there will be leaks, the key is not to ignore them.
There are also available, gas leak detector's, they work just like smoke alarms and CO detectors which every dwelling should have in the proper places.
             Thanks,  JJ
