Toilets are an essential part of modern man's life. It is not true that Thomas Crapper invented it, he did sell them and held patents on improvements. This is true: toilets use water and rely on the force that keeps us all grounded, gravity!
Early toilets of the industrial age would use up to 7 gallons of water per flush. As time passed it would be reduced to 5, then for many years 3.5. In 1995 it became law in the U.S. to use only 1.6 gallons per flush. The early generation of these toilets were not very efficient, they had to be flushed more than once  (each use) and even then there were many clogs. Do you see a conservationist wincing? Well as time went on many improvements were made. Now the major companies offer 1.28 per flush, even as low as  .8 gallons!
Most of the major plumbing fixture companies offer excellent choices that truly do help the environment. There has been reports that some buildings have had trouble with backups in their main sewer lines due to lack of water, the toilets are too efficient! Oh well, 'tis man after all...
