Warped 7/2010
Usually anything warped has lost its value. An old lp record, if you ever had one, will not play, and, if it does, it will sound awful. A person may have a warped sense of humor, sometimes it may get our attention, but not for long. My customer yesterday told me to use the front door, the heat warped the back door! Today, however, we are going to talk about a little member of your plumbing system that can warp and cost you a small fortune! The flapper on your toilet. I recently had a customer who faced an eight hundred dollar water bill! All caused by a tiny "warp" on a flapper. The flapper is there to keep the water in the tank of your toilet, until you hit the handle to let it out. When the flapper fails your toilet will run water 24 hours a day seven days a week! That is where the waste of water sets in and the small fortune mounts. You should not hear anything from your toilet until you do the flushing! If you are not sure your toilet is behaving properly, you can test it by looking at the small red dial on the water meter, be certain no-one is using the water at the time: that small dial should remain still, if it moves, then you are wasting water somewhere. The Regional Water Authority (RWA) offers many more tips of this kind, you can reach them at 203-562-4020. Be certain that you have a water tight system, for your wallet and the ecology. Try to avoid that warped sense of humor, if you can!
For those who have well water and do not pay for water, you too, need to have a water tight system! The flapper failure will cost you in several ways:
1. An increase in your electric bill.
2. Wear and tear on your well pump and equipment.
3. Excessive sweating of your piping.
4. Possible water shortage to your well.
5. Staining of your toilet finish.
6. Over taxing of septic system (which could be the most exspensive of all)
As you can "well" see, even without a water bill, the "warped" flapper is very costly!
