reprint from 1/12 "Under Pressure"
I cannot help but think of the great song from last century by Queen and David Bowie by the same title of this month's theme. Remember that one, a classic? However, it is true that the water supply lines in all plumbing systems are 'under pressure'. The average pressure in municipal water systems is about 75 pounds per square inch - psi. Well water systems are about 50 psi. Without this pressure we would get no water. This is why piping systems need to be installed properly, there is pressure 24/7. It is a good idea to be familiar with the shut-off valves in your dwelling, in case there is an unexpected leak. Water damage is one of the major causes of loss in the insurance industry. The main shut-off valve will be at the water meter in municipal systems and at the water tank/pump in well water systems. It is wise to inspect these valves for proper operation, when there is no emergency. Ask your plumber the next time he visits to check things out for you.

Oftentimes plumbers are called to homes when 'weekend plumbers' have made repairs then try to turn the main valve back on only to find it will not re-open. This is because the valve stem breaks in the closed position, sort of like Daffy Ducks trick- it can only do it once! Care needs to be taken when shutting off the main, not too tight!
Next month we will talk about managing pressure- the plumbing type!
